Understanding The Crisis

Liberia's Drug Crisis

Communities across Liberia are calling for help as substance abuse devastates families

A Nation in Crisis

Liberia faces one of West Africa's most severe drug crises. The aftermath of 14 years of civil conflict left deep psychological wounds, with many turning to substances to cope with trauma, unemployment, and hopelessness. Today, synthetic drugs like tramadol and the dangerous street mixture known as "kush" have become epidemic, particularly among young people in Monrovia and Paynesville.

The healthcare infrastructure struggles to meet the demand—Liberia has fewer than 5 psychiatrists for a population of over 5 million. Without intervention, entire communities risk losing a generation to addiction.
